The History of Amarillo Opera

Amarillo Opera was founded in April 1988 by Mila Gibson, Opera Workshop and Vocal Professor at Amarillo College from 1982-2000. The success of the first production, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, led to the incorporation of Amarillo Opera with Gibson as General Director.

In 2018, the Opera hired international opera diva, vocal coach, and co-founder of the Taos Opera Institute, Mary Jane Johnson as Artistic/General Director. Johnson, has been successful in boosting the Opera’s credibility and visibility in the community.
